Why Spill Containment Pallets Are Mandatory for Chemical Storage (And How to Choose Them)

Even with the highest quality UN-rated chemical drums, accidents happen. A forklift puncture, a loose bung, or gradual wear and tear can lead to hazardous liquid leaks. In an industrial warehouse, a chemical spill is not just a mess—it is a severe safety hazard, an environmental risk, and a guaranteed way to incur massive regulatory fines.

This is where Spill Containment Pallets become an absolute necessity for any facility handling industrial liquids, oils, or hazardous chemicals.

What is a Spill Containment Pallet?
Unlike standard plastic pallets, spill containment pallets are designed with a built-in reservoir (called a sump) underneath the top grating. If a drum leaks, the hazardous liquid drains safely into this sump rather than spreading across your warehouse floor or entering the local drainage system.

How to Choose the Right Spill Pallet:
When sourcing spill pallets for your facility or your clients, you must evaluate the following three factors to ensure regulatory compliance:

1. Calculate the Required Sump Capacity
International safety standards (such as EPA and SPCC regulations in many regions) have strict rules regarding sump capacity. The general rule of thumb is that the spill pallet must be able to hold either 10% of the total volume of all the containers stored on it, OR 100% of the volume of the largest single container—whichever figure is greater.
Always verify your local environmental regulations before purchasing.

2. High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Construction
Because these pallets are designed to catch harsh chemicals and corrosive acids, they must be manufactured from 100% high-density polyethylene (HDPE). HDPE offers superior chemical resistance compared to steel, which can rust and degrade when exposed to certain corrosives.

3. Removable Grating for Easy Cleaning
A good spill pallet should feature a flat, non-slip top grate that can be easily removed. If a spill occurs, your maintenance team needs to be able to lift the grate, safely pump out the spilled liquid from the sump, and clean the interior without hassle.

4. Forklift Accessibility
Ensure the design includes forklift pockets. Even though spill pallets are primarily for stationary storage, you will eventually need to move them when they are empty or during warehouse reorganization.
